Sustainable CT Community Leadership and Action Conferences

June 24, 2023 - 10:00 am to 3:00 pm
Free Center, Hartford
460 New Britain Ave, Hartford, CT 06106

Sustainable CT is excited to host a series of six regional Community Leadership and Action Conferences continuing on Saturday, June 24th from 10am-3pm at the Free Center in Hartford, CT (460 New Britain Ave, Hartford, CT 06106). Our goal is to bring the Community Match Fund closer to leaders and neighborhoods, while providing a platform for turning ideas into initiatives through funding, support and action. We’ll progress to New Haven, Bridgeport, New London and Waterbury throughout the rest of the year. While we encourage you to attend the conference in your region and to connect with leaders near you, if you can’t attend your local conference, all are welcome to attend any event around the state.

Please plan to join us and to help spread the word to non-profits and residents in your network. As you will see from the agenda, the morning is focused on general information about the Community Match Fund and encouragement that anyone can be successful in running a campaign. The afternoon is an opportunity for past/present/future project leaders to work together on their individual ideas and to form partnerships to launch new concepts. The second part of the afternoon is a conversation about other funding and support resources. All attendees will walk away confident about how to start a successful crowdfunding campaign to boost their projects.

Register now for the conference in Hartford and to receive information as we roll out the other conferences across the state.

In late 2022, President Biden signed the Inflation Reduction Act into law, capping a run of new, climate and energy related funding totalling almost $2 trillion; and 40% of the benefits of that funding (presumably far greater than $2 trillion) are supposed to flow to “disadvantaged communities”. Internationally, the UN Conferences of the Parties over the last few years have also sought to institutionalize financial and policy mechanisms meant to fill an estimated $500 billion/year gap in clean energy finance to the Global South.

As we enter 2024, energy justice is a burgeoning field of real-world practices driving beyond equity and remedies into major domestic and international financial instruments as well as on-the-ground energy projects of significant magnitude. Drawing on Yale’s faculty and practitioners from the field, this energy justice seminar will give attendees detailed insight into the latest thinking and practice and help prepare students to work in this field. The seminar will be inherently interdisciplinary, drawing from multiple disciplines, including but not limited to law, sociology, anthropology, and economics. It will cover topics relating to energy justice in the areas of policy and regulation, community advocacy, legal implications, health implications, and private sector innovation. (note: the seminar will NOT meet on March 12 and March 19)

Tribes and First Nations have been forest stewards since time immemorial on the land that is currently called North America. This webinar will focus on the current state of tribal forest management and Indigenous stewardship with a series of speakers from different tribes, universities, non-profits, and agencies. Beginning with an introduction to tribal forestry and the trust responsibilities, topics will include the history of forest stewardship on tribal lands in North America, federal laws and tribal forestry, contemporary uses of plants and wildlife stewardship, fire, conclusions from the Indian Forest Management Assessment (IFMAT), tribal co-management, and the future of tribal forestry in the face of climate change.

This spring speaker series is co-developed and co-hosted by The Forest School at the Yale School of the Environment, the Yale Center for Environmental Justice, and Salish Kootenai College. Join us every Thursday from January 18 to April 25 from 12:00–12:55 pm U.S. ET. Note there will be no webinars on March 14 and 21.

Death By A Thousand Cuts: A Requiem for Black and Brown Men

April 13, 2024 - 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm

Clinton Town Hall

54 East Main Street, Clinton, CT 06413

Indaba and M.A.D. Content, Clinton Arts Council, Clinton Human Rights Committee, and Henry Carter Hull Library are pleased to help bring to our shoreline community the critically acclaimed one-act play written and directed by Award-Winning screenwriter, Steve Driffin, called Death by a Thousand Cuts: A Requiem for Black and Brown Men.

This full theatrical production performed by professional actors in sold-out venues in CT and off-Broadway in NYC depicts the life encounters, trauma and microaggressions of Black and Brown men who have been historically and culturally silent about the pain they endure living in their skin in America.

Performance followed by a Q&A and panel discussion.

Allegorically told, Death by a Thousand Cuts: A Requiem for Black and Brown Men candidly unearths the raw experiences of melanated men. Drawing from the joy, pain, and the trauma of surviving in America, this is a requiem 400 years in the making.
